Selectboard Proclamation Dedication of Lazarus Park
WHEREAS, the Vermont Agency of Transportation’s investment in revitalizing the transportation infrastructure of Middlebury through the Middlebury Bridge & Rail Project has created a new public space in central downtown at the corner of Main Street and Printer’s Alley; and
WHEREAS, the design of the new public space was arrived at in a series of public meetings in 2018 and subsequently approved by the Middlebury Selectboard at its regular meeting of December 11, 2018; and
WHEREAS, the site of the new public space was occupied for most of the 20th century by the Lazarus Department Store; and
WHEREAS, residents of Middlebury petitioned the Middlebury Selectboard to name the new park after the Lazarus family and the Middlebury Selectboard signaled its intention to do so at its regular meeting of November 27, 2018; and
WHEREAS, the Vermont Agency of Transportation has developed an historical panel detailing the history of the Lazarus Department Store that will be installed in the new public space at the conclusion of the Middlebury Rail & Bridge Project; and
WHEREAS, a public ceremony to dedicate the new park to the Lazarus family took place on Saturday, August 21, 2021.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, as the Selectboard of the Town of Middlebury, we are formally recognizing that the new public space at the corner of Printer’s Alley and Main Street in central downtown Middlebury shall hereafter be known as Lazarus Park.
