Whispers from the Past Holocaust Remembrance Day Concert

“Whispers from the Past” is a free concert that interweaves music composed during the Holocaust with ancestral Jewish melodies—a program that transcends a time of sorrow with the human desire for hope.

Performing is Temple Trio, a string trio consisting of violin, viola and cello.

Besides music of composers who perished in the camps such as Viktor Ullmann, Gideon Klein and Hans Krasa, there will be music of two composers who lived through the Holocaust, as well as some Yiddish songs.

Temple Trio are players of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra (Laura Markowitz, violin; Ana Ruesink, viola; and John Dunlop, cello). Berta Frank will host the event.

When: 7:00 PM 8:30 PM Saturday, April 15, 2023

Where: Middlebury Havurah 56 North Pleasant Street Middlebury, VT, 05753

Sacred Text Burial

Sacred Text Burial and Talk by Torah Scribe Kevin Hale

Thursday, September 27

4:45pm at The Knoll (formally the College Organic Farm), Route 125

What happens to sacred texts when it has reached the end of its useful life?

Come find out how some traditions retire their sacred texts as we are led in a Jewish version of this ceremony by visiting Torah scribe Rabbi Kevin Hale, and in a multi-faith ceremony by the Middlebury College Chaplains.

The Havurah library will be contributing some texts in need of sacred burial.

After the texts are buried you are invited to remain at The Knoll to hear from Rabbi Hale about the work of a scribe and how sacred texts are handled in the Jewish tradition.

In the event of rain, the burial will still take place at the Knoll, but the talk will be in
McCardell Bicentennial Hall 219 from 5:30-6:00 pm.

Please dress for the weather.

Co-sponsored by Special Collections and Archives, Scott Center for Spiritual and Religious Life, Department of Religion, and Jewish Studies.

Come help build the Havurah sukkah

SUKKAH BUILDING on Sunday, September 23

On Sunday, September 23, we will put up the sukkah behind Havurah House.

We will meet at Havurah House between 1-2pm to begin the construction and decorating.

It should go up quickly if we have at least 4 to 6 volunteers working together.

Hardcore construction skills are NOT required.

It helps just to have people hold walls in place while others do the attaching.

We will have enough ladders and drills (but feel free to bring your own).

A pair of work or gardening gloves is recommended.
Not a builder? That’s OK. You can help out in other ways like bringing a snack for the workers or bringing some decorations (corn, gourds and mini pumpkins)!

Adults and kids alike can assist at our decoration station. Come help make paper chains and other crafts to hang in and to beautify our sukkah.

Please RSVP so we have a sense of how many helpers we have!

Erev Sukkot Service & Potluck Dinner

Erev Sukkot Service & Potluck Dinner
Sunday, September 23 at 5:30pm

This year we will be hosting a brief Erev Sukkot Service in the Sukkah (weather permitting) followed by a special potluck dinner. We especially encourage people to bring food items related to the fall harvest and extra points for any locally grown items (perhaps from your own garden!)

We wanted to offer an opportunity to come together, shake a lulav, raise our voices and recall the meaningful themes of this festival holiday.

Our brief service will begin shortly after we gather at 5:30pm and dinner should be underway by 6:15pm. Feel free to bring your own lulav/etrog set but we will have one available.

Please let us know what delicious nut-free dish you can bring so we can plan our set up needs RSVP by Sept. 20 .

Recipe packets will be available to help you make use of all those apples.

Happy Valley is located at 217 Quarry Rd in Middlebury. Parking available on site.

All ages welcome!

High Holy Day Food Drive

We are preparing for our High Holy Day Food Drive and need a few volunteers to ensure everything runs smoothly!

Bags will be handed out at Rosh Hashanah Services (and available at Havurah House) to be returned on Yom Kippur full of non perishable foods. There will also be an ongoing collection site at Havurah House.

Tasks include: affixing flyers to the donation bags, getting materials over to Mead Chapel, handing out bags at the end of Rosh Hashanah services and driving filled bags to H.O.P.E. after Yom Kippur. This is a great opportunity for recent B’nei Mitzvah age students but any and all help is appreciated!

All food collected will be donated to H.O.P.E. and help to feed families right here in our own community. We are still looking for volunteers to help coordinate this effort so if you are able to help please contact Sarit Katzew.
